Stairway to Heaven Recap

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

derek_cristinaFirst off – in a very unusual move, Denny did the voice over narration instead of Meredith. This has happened a couple of times before, but I’m glad they did it because it set the tone of the episode. Death, death and more death was at the heart of this one. Let’s discuss…

William succeeded in knocking himself unconscious. Meredith stabilized him and planned to let him die as he wished. She let Bailey know that he wasn’t going to live long and that he was willing to donate his organs to Jackson, Bailey’s patient. Bailey chided Mer, telling her she needed to do everything she could to save her patient But as Jackson’s condition deteriorated, she begged Derek to not do surgery on William so Jackson could have his organs. That was a great scene – Bailey and Derek, staring each other down with Derek icily saying, “It’s your call Dr. Bailey. Am I a surgeon or am I an executioner?” Chandra Wilson needs an Emmy, y’all.

The Chief and George went on an organs hunt and miraculously (read: only on TV) found a match. The Chief finally located a patient that was about to be taken off life support and after a couple of tries, convinced the patient’s wife to donate his organs. Jackson woke up after the surgery and thank goodness because I don’t think Bailey or the viewers would have made it had he not.

Meanwhile, Izzie tries repeatedly to break up with Denny but he won’t go away. Finally he tells her to use her knowledge as a doctor to figure it out. In a heartbreaking scene she realizes she is sick and screams at Denny for not telling her. This was a great payoff for a subplot that has dragged on for way, way too long. Katherine Heigl did a superb job with that material and should have plenty to put on her “For your consideration” reel now.

Derek told Cristina he plans to propose and asked for her advice. In a cute scene, he told Cristina that he new Mer would need someone to “freak out to” and that she missed her. Cristina dismissed him, but after William’s execution, Derek took the inconsolable Meredith to Cristina’s. Cristina went out to the car to calm Meredith down. Was anyone else aggravated that the music played over their first words to each other? I wanted to know what they said.

Oh, and Lexie fractured Sloan’s junk. I kind of like these two together. That was sweet when she got into bed with him and stroked his hair. Will it last, though? That’s the question.

Ok, what else?

More Scoop!

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

callieMichael Ausiello over at Entertainment Weekly is always good for some scoop and here’s his latest…

Question: Seriously, how much longer is Denny going to be around for on Grey’s? Love Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but it’s just not working for me. — Lauren
Ausiello: He’ll be around at least through March, since that’s when Izzie’s aneurysm-esque medical condition finally gets diagnosed.
Question: I am loving the new doc Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) on Grey’s Anatomy. Any news on whether they plan to keep her on? — Amy
Ausiello: They’re grooming her as a love interest for Callie, so I suspect she’ll be staying put for now. Speaking of which, look for Callie to seek advice from Addison about her feelings for Arizona in the Feb. 12 crossover episode.

Two Things: 1) I also love Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but this is starting to drag on too long. How about explaining what’s going on and showing the conflict of Izzie dealing with finding out she’s sick and Denny is a result of her illness? How about showing her having to choose to have surgery to repair her aneurysm which means she’ll lose Denny all over again? That kind of stuff is what I’m waiting for and I’m hoping it will be a big payoff. But in the meantime, we’re left to scratch our heads about why he’s there and it is frustrating.

2) I’m not really a fan of Arizona just yet. Maybe she’ll grow on me. But it seems to me that if they didn’t like Callie with Hahn that they would go a different route this time. I wonder if the Callie and Arizona thing doesn’t work out if Jessica Capshaw will be booted from the show, too. And how will they address the Sadie exit?

Going to the Chapel?

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

108490_7591In last week’s episode, Derek’s mother gave him her engagement ring along with her blessing for him to propose to Meredith. Now longtime fans of Mer and Der were squealing with this new development. But will they really get engaged, much less get married?

TV Guide’s Matt Mitovich gives us a little bit of information on that topic:

Dude needs to unload it and quick, I’d say! Instead (sigh), he will hold onto it long enough for virtually every Seattle Gracer — Meredith excluded, of course — to learn of the bauble’s being and in turn offer their two cents on when and how he should pop the Q. Will Der stick to his original plan? And if so, does it involve a meticulously crafted arrangement of candles?

No surprise there. It would be too easy if Derek immediately proposed to Meredith. And it wouldn’t be Grey’s Anatomy if everyone else got their noses stuck in this business. I’m a big fan of Meredith and Derek and I’m enjoyed the past few episodes where we’ve seen them disagree on the serial killer. But is Meredith ready to say “I do” and leave behind her (as Derek would say) “frat house”? What do you think? Are they ready yet?

Sympathy for the Devil Recap

Friday, January 16th, 2009

These past two episodes have been really good. I love the continuity of the storylines. It’s much better than those stand alone episodes that it doesn’t matter if you’ve seen the previous week or not.

This week continues the serial killer’s (William) story. He wants to give his organs to Bailey’s dying patient, Jackson. As it turns out, William was a match, but another child died, and they proceeded with the surgery using his organs instead. The organs didn’t take and Jackson had 24 hours to live without another transplant.

The creepy William continued to get into Meredith’s head. He begged Derek to let him die instead of having brain surgery. They did emergency surgery and after William heard that Jackson’s surgery was unsuccessful, he asked Meredith to help him find a way to die so Jackson could have his organs. Meredith told him that if he damaged the head wound, he would likely die. After she left the room, he began working to injure his head wound.

Meanwhile, Derek’s mother arrived. Sloan hid from her and when finally confronted, he confessed his affair with Lexie to her. She told him he should be happy. So I wonder if these two are going to try to actually be a couple now? Might be interesting.

Meredith tried to be all sunny and Izzie-like for the meeting, but it didn’t work. Best line of the night came courtesy of Mer’s still estranged BFF, Cristina – “That ponytail? It’s going to blow.” Those two still need to get back together. Cristina can obviously use someone to talk to about the Major. The shower scene? Interesting – didn’t know what to make of it.

Denny is still hanging around but Izzie has had enough. She tells him she’s “breaking up” with him. And happily listens to Alex’s idea for a road trip to meet his mother. Then we saw Denny sit down next to Alex and say they needed to talk. Let’s just get this storyline going – whatever it is going to be – let’s hurry up and find out, because I love Denny, but they are dragging it out way too long and it’s ridiculous.

And big news - Derek got his mother’s engagement ring!! Going to the McChapel???

Another Grey’s Anatomy Exit

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Well, it seems as though we get some scoop on cast members coming and going on Grey’s Anatomy every other week. The latest news is that guest star Melissa George will be ending her stint as Meredith’s pre-Cristina BFF, Sadie. Melissa was originally scheduled to appear in four episodes. Producers and fans were so pleased with her performance that they extended her contract for four more episodes, bringing her total up to eight.

The original plan was for Sadie to start a relationship with Callie. But now that Sadie is leaving, that won’t happen. Melissa is shooting her final episode this week. Jessica Capshaw, aka Dr. Arizona is the next in line to hook up with Callie. Or that’s the rumor, at least. What do you think? Will you miss Sadie? I do admit, I liked her presence for no other reason that she was a link to Meredith’s past. I was hoping we’d find out more about a pre-Seattle Grace Mer, but I guess not.

Recap

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Instead of a traditional recap, I’m going to recap by pairs. Jump in and let me know what you think…

Meredith and Derek: These two fall on opposite sides of how to treat a serial killer. Meredith wants to make him as comfortable as possible, while Derek is fine giving him the minimum painkillers. We did learn that Derek’s father was killed in a robbery attempt, which explained his position.Eric Stolz was great as the creepy killer that tried to get everyone to believe they are only one bad day away from being no different than him. His presence at Seattle Grace caused some drama between another pair..

Cristina and Meredith: Cristina and Meredith still aren’t speaking. While it makes for good drama, I much prefer these two as friends. Neither seems willing to budge. Sadie reminded Meredith that he unwillingness to work on their relationship caused them to grow apart. Sadie had a great line about Cristina, “That girl mates for life.” Too funny. And Sadie caused problems for…

Callie and Mark: Callie wants Sadie, Mark wants Lexie. I actually kind of prefer those two with each other, but I’m willing to give the Mark Lexie thing some time to grow on me. Callie and Mark as always funny together and the show has needed that dose of humor lately.

Alex and Izzie. Izzie finally told Alex about Denny, but instead of being upset or concerned about it, he laughed it off. Izzie seems to have made a choice of trying to let Denny go, but will he? Or will he still be hanging around next week?

Arizona and Bailey: I’m with Bailey, Arizona (“who didn’t have the sense to change her name”) seems a bit to blasé about patient care. But that’s ok, because if it gives Bailey a better storyline, I’m all for it.

George is still very much in the background. Tyne Daly guests as Derek’s mom next week. Are Hunt and Cristina going to hook up or what? And I’m tired of the moody Chief.

College Football or Grey’s Anatomy?

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Two big television events are occurring tonight – the BCS National Championship game for college football matching Oklahoma and Florida and the return of Grey’s Anatomy. Which one will you watch?

Well, if you’re reading this blog, I’m assuming you’ll be watching Grey’s and flipping over to get that score during commercials. Tonight’s new episode will be the first appearance of Eric Stolz as a serial killer sentenced to death row. He will arrive at Seattle Grace with critical injuries. Stolz occasionally directs episodes of the show. Eric gave TV Guide an interesting interview and mentions a bit about what might happen during his three episode arc.

TVGuide.com: There’s a bit of a disconnect between “Eric Stoltz” and “serial killer.” One, are you glad there’s that disconnect? And two, do you think it helps you bring something different to the role?
Eric Stoltz: [Laughs] Yes, I am happy that I really don’t have much in common with killers. Absolutely. But, that being said, it’s always bracing to explore what I might actually have in common with them underneath at all. Throughout the course of the day, I do have impulses to lash out at someone or to ram the car that took my parking space or yell at the cab that splashed water on me. But because I’m living in society and want to be a good person, I don’t let those impulses out.
TVGuide.com: Is your character, William, remorseful at all?
Stoltz: You think he might have some remorse, but he could also be playing at having remorse, in order to get what he wants. Sociopaths tend to be pretty good actors. Nobody had any idea what Ted Bundy was up to for a long time.
TVGuide.com: To be clear, this story arc isn’t about whether William could get loose and go on a rampage in the hospital, but to what lengths the doctors should go to save his life, right?
Stoltz: Either of those [stories] could come to be. You never know, it’s [Grey's creator] Shonda Rhimes!
TVGuide.com: Does William’s case present divisive moral and ethical dilemmas for the doctors?
Stoltz: Absolutely. When someone on death row is brought to a hospital, doctors are confronted with their own ethical code. “Is it right to save the life of someone who has done so much bad in the world?” “What is a doctor’s job and how should one respond to this situation?” It presents a lot of interesting, rich things for all these talented actors to play with.
TVGuide.com: Particularly toward the end of your arc, you have a lot of scenes with Ellen Pompeo. Does William create any sort of drama for Meredith and/or her relationship with Derek?
Stoltz: Yes, I certainly insinuate myself into their relationship and am the source of not a little strife.
TVGuide.com: Is he a charmer despite his “shortcomings”?
Stoltz: I would like to think so!
TVGuide.com: Of course you would. What was it like becoming a part of the very Grey’s cast you raved about the last time we spoke?
Stoltz: It was a joy. They didn’t hesitate to knock me down a few pegs and remind me that I am no longer directing them.
TVGuide.com: Will there be any sort of body count during your three-episode run?
Stoltz: Uh, possibly!
TVGuide.com: OK, give us one last super-vague tease that won’t make Shonda angry.
Stoltz: [Laughs] I’ve probably already said too much.

Is TR Knight Staying on Grey’s?

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Now this is certainly interesting news. Before the holidays it was widely reported that TR Knight had asked to be let out of the remainder of his seven year contract with Grey’s Anatomy. Sources close to TR said he was unhappy with his lackluster storyline and lack of screen time. Producers were set to grant TR his wish and let him out of the contract and off the show, but now rumors are swirling that he may not be going anywhere. Kristin at E! is reporting that TR might be staying with the show. Her sources claim that producers are working hard to get him to stay on the show.

I don’t know what to think about this. It seems to me like the producers might be trying to stave off another PR nightmare after the Brooke Smith firing. George is a favorite character on the show and we all know that TR Knight has outstanding potential when given the material. (Remember his father’s surgery and death? And helping deliver Bailey’s son Tucker? TR was great in those stories). I hope he stays and I hope the show can give him a meatier storyline going forward.
