1 out of 4 ain’t bad

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Well, Patrick Dempsey, Ellen Pompeo and Katherine Heigl all lost in their respective acting categories at the Golden Globes last night. But the good news is that Grey’s Anatomy won the Globe for Best Drama! I wasn’t surprised that Ellen lost, or that Patrick lost to Hugh Laurie, but I really thought Katherine had it bagged up. Oh well, there’s always the Emmy’s!

And on a related note, way to go America Ferrera and Ugly Betty! Also big ups to Jennifer Hudson - that girl will get the Oscar, you just wait.

NAACP Image Awards

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Isaiah Washington and Vanessa Williams announced the 38th Annual NAACP Image award nominees last week. Grey’s is nominated for “Best Drama.” They won the award last year so here’s hoping it will be two in a row!

And by the way - if you’re not watching Vanessa’s show “Ugly Betty,” you should be.

Spoilerific!

Monday, January 15th, 2007

Ok, you spoiler-phobes, avert those precious eyes. I’ve got some goodies from our boy Mike at TV Guide. Enjoy!

Question: Any Grey’s scoop for us?— Caroline
Ausiello: The show’s currently shooting an episode for February sweeps that promises to make last year’s turbocharged post-Super Bowl outing look like a stroll through Magic Garden. According to several sources, the action centers around a fire on a passenger ferry, and scenes were shot both on location along the Seattle waterfront as well as in Santa Anita, California. “It’s going to be ginormous in terms of scope,” reveals one spy, who says that more than 200 extras were employed for the disaster scenes. My invitation must’ve gotten lost in the mail.

Question: I’ve got a question about your Grey’s /Elizabeth Reaser news: Does this mean someone might leave the show? Because right now Grey’s seems like a cast of thousands.— Caitlin
Ausiello: I’ve been hearing rumors about a major Grey’s exit for months, but as of now they remain just that: rumors. Regarding Reaser, her role is still in the process of being conceived by Shonda Rhimes, and word on the set is that the shrink thing may not stick.

Patrick Dempsey is everywhere

Monday, January 15th, 2007

McDreamy is out and about picking up awards, visiting talkshows and doing press for his movie “Freedom Writers” with Hilary Swank. All the while plugging Grey’s Anatomy. The thing I love about Patrick is that he is always very candid. During the whole nasty fight on the set, he was the very first one to say something to the press to try to diffuse the situation. And I still just love him for sticking up for TR (if that’s what was truly going on). Anyway, he did an interview with Life Magazine and had some interesting things to say about his family:

“Fatherhood is the most important thing. Everything else is a joke,” he tells Life magazine in its new issue, about being at home with his wife Jillian, a makeup artist, and the couple’s 4-year-old daughter, Talula. They are also expecting twin sons this winter.

“Now,” says Dempsey, who turns 41 on Saturday, “making money is about providing for my children. And being a father makes you look at yourself. You look at your marriage and go ‘How do I improve this? How do I keep growing and create a stable environment for my children?’ ”

One way, he reveals, is to go to couples therapy. “Yeah, we go in for checkups and go ‘Hey, here’s what we need to work on,’ ” he says. “We’ve had a very good relationship from the beginning, but you run into things you have to work through.”

He also adds that therapy “is easier than fighting with someone.”

There are also some remedies that he delivers at home. “Reading to my daughter has been therapeutic,” says Dempsey, who is dyslexic. “I’ve gone back and started to learn to read on a very basic level. I’m reading Dr. Seuss, and I’m healing that part of myself, as well as developing my daughter.”

Playing Uncle

Friday, January 12th, 2007

Let me just start out with the obvious – I love this show. Love it. So let’s recap, shall we?

Before Mr. O’Malley’s surgery, he made the Chief and Bailey promise him that they would remove the tumor, no matter how severe it was. The Chief told him he would have less of a chance of survival if they did that, but O’Malley wouldn’t relent. He shared a few sweet moments with George before the surgery. Meredith assisted with the surgery and they found that the cancer had spread extensively. Meredith asked why they didn’t stop and Bailey told her it was Mr. O’Malley’s wish and that no one was to know.

Meanwhile, George was a wreck and leaned on Meredith, Izzie and even Callie for support. He asked Burke for advice about his dad’s case and he closely monitored him after the surgery. When he noticed his father’s urine output level was good, he was so excited he danced around with Callie and then kissed her. It was a sweet moment. I think these two are about three seconds away from getting back together. Even though I didn’t like Callie in the beginning, I do like her now. I hope George takes his dad’s advice and gets back with “the only person that ever really got you.?

Izzie was assigned to a case with a girl with a spine disorder which made her life horrible. Callie was also on the case and she asked Bailey how she could convince Derek to consult on the case. Bailey showed her how to stare down Derek and it worked. They convinced the girl to go through with the complicated surgery. The girl’s mother didn’t want her to do it, but she said, “There are things that are worse than death? prompting Izzie to finally have a breakthrough – you could see it on her face. She took the check to the bank to deposit it. While there, she broke down and told the banker she needed to do something good with it and she really just needed to be done with it. Good for her. Now she can really move on. This did set up a bit of a clichéd plot point, though. Her patient’s insurance won’t cover the $200,000+ surgery, so guess who will? Yeah, see that one coming a mile away. But I’m hoping this will further her story and she’ll use the money to form a foundation of some kind to help people with medical bills, etc.

Derek and Meredith are happy now, except for Meredith’s snoring. But Thatcher is at the hospital a lot visiting his sick granddaughter and Meredith keeps bumping into him. She finally gets some advice from the Chief that she might actually take. He encourages her to ask Thatcher what happened to his relationship with Ellis and why he never tried to contact Meredith. Looks like that big show down is coming next week.

McSteamy is in a bad mood and is particularly mean to Addison. When she tells him she’s sorry he is hurting, he retorts, “Are you sorry I’m hurting or are you just sorry?? Where did this come from? Is he upset that he moved to “this hell hole? thinking he’d be with her and she ditched him? Hasn’t he been pretty busy bedding Callie and trying to pick up Meredith to be sad? But did you see the preview – my, oh, my – he says to Addison, “You didn’t want to have a baby? and she responds, “No, I wanted to have a baby, I just didn’t want to have one with you.? OUCH. I can’t wait to see how this plays out. When Mark was rude to Addison, Alex got back at him by bringing in him a latte instead of a bone dry cappuccino (whatever that is). As they were caring for Meredith’s neice, he told Addison that and they almost kissed. Ok, I’m just going to tell y’all, I was the number one Alex hater from day one, but I love that the writers have shown him to be more than just a jerk. We’ve seen him be a rock for Izzie when she needed someone and now he’s actually standing up to the person that could help him land a career as a plastic surgeon because he cares about Addison. I love it. And I love these two together. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

And last and least, Christina and Burke are still playing a ridiculous game of “uncle.? Someone has to give in eventually, grow up people. I’m about tired of these two, am I the only one? Remember how intense and emotional their relationship was before? With the miscarriage, etc.? Now they just seem to silently hate each other and spend all their engery trying to get the upperhand. I’m sick of it.

Other thoughts: how cute is Derek? I mean, seriously. With his morning breath and all – so cute. I was so glad Bailey was featured more in this episode. And teaching the stare down to Callie – loved it.

Talk to me, people, what did you think?

Casting news

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

According to Mike Ausiello at TV Guide:

The emotionally unstable residents at Seattle Grace are finally getting just what the doctor ordered: a shrink.

Sources tell me that Elizabeth Reaser — most recently Tom Everett Scott’s leading lady on TNT’s Saved — is joining the cast of Grey’s Anatomy as a psychiatrist. My spy says Reaser will start off as a recurring guest star, but the gig could become full-time.

I have to confess, I never watched Saved and, therefore, am not familiar with Reaser’s work. Do we like her? Any thoughts on which character she’s being brought on to, um, psychoanalyze? Post your thoughts below!

She was in “The Family Stone” but I don’t remember her in that. So, I don’t know anything about her, either. Does anyone?

The pilot

Monday, January 8th, 2007

I watched the pilot episode on Lifetime last night. It brought back such fond memories - I LOVED when it was on Sunday nights. It seemed like such a perfect way to end the weekend and start the week - with my Grey’s fix. I don’t own the DVDs (I KNOW, seriously, I can’t believe that, either), so I’m going to watch it on Lifetime. I found lots of things that Shonda Rhimes carefully set up in the pilot that allude to current storylines.

1) Derek and Meredith. They were always intended to be the show’s center. It’s that simple.
2) Izzie and Bailey - from literally day one, Izzie and Bailey had a unique relationship.
3) George and Burke - he picked George for the first surgery because he intending to “ride one hard and the rest will behave.” Before the accident, they became close.
4) Alex is an ass. But, I am so glad that he isn’t simply a one note character like he was in the pilot. He’s shown others sides lately.
5) Christina and Meredith - let the love/hate friendship begin. Christina was the first to know about Meredith and Derek. That set the stage for her later relationship with Burke.
6) Meredith is all dark and twisty inside with lots of momma problems.
7) And the first person to utter the word seriously was…. CHRISTINA. But, she said it ABOUT Izzie, so I love it.

Can’t wait to see the rest of the series unfold all over again!

2007 the best year yet?

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

I really cannot wait for this year’s new episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. We’ve got one more Thursday before new episodes return. The first episode back will be a two parter with George’s father going into surgery.

So, what would you like to see happen this year? I’d like to see how it would work to have Meredith and Derek actually stay together. I hope the pregnancy, engagement and marriage rumors for George and Callie aren’t true. I’d like to see Addison and Alex together. And most importantly – more Bailey.

What about you?
