“Where the boys are

Friday, November 10th, 2006

The mountain men Derek and Burke plan a camping trip to get away and clear their heads. Burke invites George and before you know it the Chief, Joe and Walter and Alex are all tagging along. Once in the mountains, George tells everyone that he is going to get back together with Callie when they return home. Alex urges him not to do that, but won’t give him a reason. Finally, when pushed, Alex tells George that Callie and Sloan are sleeping together. They get into a fight that the Chief has to break up. To let them settle it, the Chief sets boundaries and starts them in “open hand combat while Derek laments the juvenile way of settling things and Burke cheers George on. The fight escalates and Walter gets shoved down and cracks his head open.

The doctors go to work on Walter and George nervously looks on as Burke starts to stitch Walter up. Earlier George had noticed Burke’s hand tremor. Burke knows that George saw that. After a slight hesitation, he finishes the job with no problem. After finding out that Sloan has slept with Callie, too, Derek storms off. The Chief and Burke go after him and Derek calls Mark “a cancer that infects everything. The guys decide to head home.

Back at Seattle Grace, Sloan enters the lounge and gives Callie a knowing glance, in full view of Addison. Addison picks up on it. Addy and Callie team up to work on a patient and when Addison discovers that the pregnant patient’s baby has died, she leaves and breaks down. Callie follows her and offers a shoulder to cry on. After an exhausting day, Addison asks Callie if she slept with Sloan. Callie said yes and Addison offered her sympathy.

An angry Bailey confronts Christina on why she erased her name from the humpty dumpty surgery. When Christina refuses to answer, she gives her a patient that has swallowed Monopoly pieces to look after. When the boy goes into surgery, Bailey refuses to let Christina in because she won’t admit to erasing Bailey’s name. Bailey tells Christina that she has sealed her fate by refusing to own up to it.

Izzie spends the day with perky peer counselor Sydney. Sydney presses Izzie to talk about Denny all day and after trying to hide from her by helping Christina. She finally snapped and said she didn’t want to talk about Denny. Sydney told her she lost a child patient and it was her fault so she did understand what Izzie was going through. Izzie confided that she did want to be back at Seattle Grace but she doesn’t know if she can be a surgeon again.

At the bar Sloan urged Meredith to drop Derek and start over. When Derek entered he told her he wanted to start completely over with her so they could get to know each other. Meredith hesitated and told him that he was the one that left. But in the end, she took his hand and introduced herself.

My commentary is forthcoming, y’all. Hang tight. Just wanted to post the straight up recap for you.

Grey’s gets a new neighbor

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

As much as I fussed about Grey’s being moved from Sunday to Thursday, the new time slot has started to grow on me (and much of America) big time. I remember when Thursday truly was “Must See TV” with Friends and ER. It was the perfect way to enjoy great TV before the weekend. I have been pleasantly surprised at how well the pairing of Grey’s and “Ugly Betty” has worked out - both are doing very well ratings-wise. It was a huge vote of confidence on ABC’s part to let the freshman dramedy pair up with the hugely popular Grey’s. News comes today that ABC will be relocating Anne Heche’s Men In Trees” to the plum spot post Grey’s. “Men” was just given a back nine script order, so they’ll be sticking around the rest of the season.

A “Desperate Housewives” rerun will follow tonight’s show. Look for “Men” next week.

So what do you think? Are you adjusting well to the Thursday spot? Any thoughts on sticking around to watch Ann’s show?

Cute picture of Kate and Isaiah

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

I thought this was too cute to not post. I can’t believe how much Kate (well Addison) has grown on me since she first stepped foot in Seattle Grace.

How about some Wednesday scoop?

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

Michael Ausiello at TV Guide is on the case. Here’s a little bit from him:

Would you please be so kind as to tell me anything about Grey’s Anatomy you know?— Ari
Ausiello: Let me preface this by saying you should take all Grey’s prattle with a grain of salt. It’s becoming near-impossible to separate fact from foiler. (Damn you, Rhimes!) That said, it looks like Izzie is getting ready to deposit that big ol’ check of hers, but it’s not going to be easy. I hear she’s going to suffer an emotional breakdown at the bank when she passes what’s left of Denny over to the teller. Of course, she can take comfort in knowing that at least she’s using the moola for a good cause. A really good cause. Any guesses?

Question: Any Grey’s poop?— Molly
Ausiello: More fisticuffs — but this time they’re on screen. Based on that Alex-George brawl we saw in the previews for tomorrow’s episode, it’s pretty obvious that Alex told George that Callie slept with Mark. Well, I hear Callie is going to think Meredith was the one who blabbed, and another brawl ensues

The OC shouts out Grey’s

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

In a fun little nod to Grey’s Anatomy, The OC is sending Dr. Roberts to Seattle Grace for a job!

Question: What’s this I hear about a Grey’s Anatomy/O.C. crossover?!— Jennifer
Ausiello: Here’s the deal: In Thursday’s episode, Dr. Roberts announces that he’s taking a job at a “quirky” hospital in Seattle called Seattle Grace. The following week, Kaitlin gives a not-so-subtle shout-out to Bailey when she refers to the “short, sassy lady bossing him around.” Just another reason I still worship this show.

LOVE IT! You know you’re a hit when other shows shout you out - love it!

Sara Ramirez

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

Entertainment Weekly has featured Sara Ramirez in their “5 Things You Should Know About” section. Here’s what you should know about Dr. Callie Torres.

1) She plays a doctor on TV and has the brains to back it up.
Born in Mazatlan, Mexico, and raised in San Diego, Ramirez — the daughter of an actress/singer/educator mother and an oceanographer/professor father — had orginally considered a career in engineering.

2) Her character on Grey’s is as self-assured as she is.
“(Dr. Torres is) a tall, full bodied Latina, who is being portrayed not as a victim of her tallness or her size. (Creator) Shonda Rimes wants to make Callie sexy,” says Ramirez, who is 5′9″. Latinas — we’re in touch with our sensuality.”

3) Thanks to Grey’s, Ramirez is more comfortable with her own anatomy.
“I was pretty much naked last season…They put me in my underwear, for God’s sake. I felt intimidated and fat. I said to (Rimes), ‘Girl, there is so much cottage cheese up in this set.’ She smiled and said, ‘Work it.’ She would not entertain my insecurities. It was a beautiful thing.”

4) If she can make it there, she’ll make it anywhere.
In New York City, at age 17, “I lived in a 10-by-16 room with a loft bed at the top of a walk-up brownstone. The bathroom and fridge were in the hallway, (which) I had to share.” Things began looking up when she entered Julliard’s drama program; upon graduation, she landed her first film role, as the grocery cashier who takes Meg Ryan to task (”Cash on-ly”) in 1998’s You’ve Got Mail.

5) Someday she’ll return to the Great White Way.
She’s been in four Broadway musicals, including Paul Simon’s The Capeman. “Theater is my home,” she says, but “I never thought I’d be in a (TV) show of this caliber.”

Patrick’s battle with dyslexia

Monday, November 6th, 2006

I just read an interesting article about Patrick Dempsey’s dyslexia. He wasn’t diagnosed until the age of 12. He spent much of his childhood struggling to just read and not understanding why he was having so many problems. He reveals that even now he has trouble reading the scripts in the read throughs. He prefers to memorize it. But he does say “I think it’s made me who I am today, It’s given me a perspective of – you have to keep working. I have never given up.”

You’ve got to love that attitude. Keep on keeping on.

Ham or Eggs?

Friday, November 3rd, 2006

I seriously love this show. Seriously. Last night’s episode was a great mix of humor and drama and once again it did not disappoint.

My favorite scene was at the beginning. It is Izzie’s first day back and she is too distracted to play best friend to George. Something is bothering Christina and she is too busy to listen to Meredith. Meredith and George stop the elevator and play a little role reversal: Meredith becomes Izzie and George complains that Callie dumped him and he doesn’t know what to do. Meredith channels Izzie and says seriously about 18 times and gives George a bit of hope. George returns the favor as Meredith tells “Christina” about finding Derek fresh from the shower with another woman. George gets the best line of the night, “That McBastard!” Too funny.

Turns out the woman was Derek’s overbearing and annoying sister Nancy. Mark and Addison and sure happy to see her, though. But she was too much for me. Hope she doesn’t come back for another visit anytime soon. She did get Derek to think about his future and told him to take some time for himself because he had never been single. (gee, wonder why?) And Derek told Meredith he needed exactly that and she smiled and agreed. Nice. This was a nice, no jumping through hoops development.

Meanwhile, Christina is buy arranging all of Burke’s surgeries and studying up for them since she has to be in ALL of them to help him since he still has hand tremors. The pressure becomes too much for her and she is racked with guilt when she removes Bailey from the OR board on the humpty dumpty surgery. Bailey figured out in the end that Christina did it – after spending the whole day agonizing that Burke had lost his confidence in her abilities.

Speaking of which, the Chief told Bailey that some of the doctors were concerned about her judgement since Izzie was her intern and the Denny fiasco happened on her watch. Bailey was clearly rattled, and Bailey doesn’t get rattled. It seems to me that the Chief is only around to give commentary to everyone and about everyone nowadays. Didn’t he used to be a surgeon?

Izzie is assigned to Meredith with the strict instructions to observe and not say or do anything. Their patient (the fabulous actress that was Irene on “Two Guys and A Girl”) purposefully burned her hand to avoid taking the bar exam for a fifth time. Izzie picked up on it right away and Meredith did not. I think Izzie is closer to finding her place – she doesn’t need to be a surgeon, she needs to be a social worker, a counselor or something similar. We’ll see.

Alex was also pondering his future as McTool (sorry, y’all, I just am not a fan) gave him the assignment to stay on hold with the DMV instead of scrubbing in on plastic surgeries. When Addison and George’s patient interested him he scrubbed in and ended up saving another baby by helping soothe her so Addison could do surgery. Alex has found his calling. It’ll be interesting to see if he fights it or not. And how will he handle finding out that Callie and McSteamy slept together? I have a feeling the old Alex will use that little bit of info to his advanatge. A zebra can’t change its strips, right? And I have a feeling this will come on the heels of George telling Callie he is ready to “catch” her.

Talk to me – what did you think?

Remember when I said the PR machine would be in high gear?

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

I hate to be completely cynical, but after the whole drama of the on set scuffle between Patrick and Isaiah I said I would be on the lookout for the Isaiah PR machine to kick into high gear. I was expecting to see pictures of him working with Habitat for Humanity, with his kids reading them a story, something to show his soft side. But there hasn’t been any of that - nothing, zippo, zilch, zero. But low and behold, a Patrick Dempsey smear campaign is underway. Coincidence or no?

Patrick married 47 year old Rocky Parker when he was only 21. (Ewww..) They divorced 4 years later. Now several tabloids are reporting that Rocky claimed during the divorce that Patrick beat her up on the set of “Can’t Buy Me Love.” Parker has now issued a statement saying during their terrible divorce she was advised to say negative and untrue things about Patrick.

So - the timing is very interesting, isn’t it? Maybe it is just another case of the press trying to tear down a celebrity and it has nothing to do with an attempt to damage Patrick’s reputation to even it out with the damage done to Isaiah’s reputation. What do you think?
